Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a chronic lung disease that lasts for years with the main clinical manifestation of shortness of breath. This disorder can cause discomfort and difficulty breathing. Pursed lip breathing is one of the non-pharmacological interventions that can help relieve COPD symptoms, especially in terms of respiratory muscle relaxation. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the application of pursed lip breathing interventions to overcome ineffective breathing patterns in patients with COPD. Method: This scientific paper method uses a case study with a nursing care process approach, involving 1 adult respondent with COPD, who has a nursing diagnosis of ineffective breathing patterns. The research instrument consisted of an observation sheet, as well as standard operating procedures (SOP) for pursed lip breathing. Results: This intervention was carried out in the morning at 10:00 WIB once a day for 15 minutes and it was found that the respondent's breathing pattern improved before and after the intervention, namely chest retraction (-), nasal flaring (-), rhonchi (-), use of accessory respiratory muscles (-). Discussion: Pursed lip breathing has a significant impact on improving respiratory muscle relaxation. A long expiration during pursed lip breathing helps remove obstructions in the airway, thereby reducing resistance to breathing. This reduced resistance allows for smoother inhalation and exhalation, which in turn reduces shortness of breath. Recommendation: Healthcare professionals can adopt this intervention for COPD patients with ineffective breathing patterns.
